Here is a short film Angela Hum, Andrew Rappo and I made for our Media 150 course. We are really proud with the outcome and had a great time filming. We look forward to it possibly being screened at the lecture class meeting.

Titanic’s success secrets REVEALED: Museum of the Moving Image

On Wednesday November 9, 2011 I attended a class trip to the beautiful Museum of Moving Images in Astoria, Queens NY. The museum has three floors and our tour guide presented a demo on how a scene from the Titanic was actually put together.

 

First our guide instructed us to listen closely to the audio of the scene where the Titanic is actually sinking, without providing us with the video footage. During the very first listen I had heard lots of water sounds, something that sounded like a wooden barrel being dropped to the ground, a subtle roar (which was quite strange), lots of ship passengers yelling frantically and of course the dialogue between the actors.

 

He (our guide) had asked us what we heard and everyone had picked out the obvious sounds of water, dialogue and a “thud” that hit the floor. Audio for dialogue, Foley sound effects (reproduction of everyday sounds for use in filmmaking) and the music score were on different audio tracks in the pro tools audio editing software.  He then selected each track to listen to by itself and re-watched the scene with each element individually…

 

When we watched the scene with only the dialogue of the actors the scene was actually humorous. Their voices did not seem to match the intensity of the sinking Titanic. Reactions (in my opinion) came off rather phony and awkward. I actually raised my hand and made a comment that it was probably recorded in a studio rather than on set. I was correct and it was because there were too many noises during production that it would have been difficult to get a clear recording and the cinematography would have made it difficult to use boom mics.

 

Watching the scene again with just the Foley sound effects proved to be shocking to everyone. We heard water and suction noises and discovered that the “thud” was a chair dropped on a wooden floor. The legs of the chair and the wooden floor mimicked the part where Kate Winslet’s character falls on the wooden deck of the Titanic. We also heard ANIMAL sounds. During the part where a ship passenger was being sucked into a different part of the ship we heard the roar of a lion played backwards. Also when the steel cables snapped and one of the towers on the ship started to fall into the ocean we heard silenced gunshots and the cry of an elephant. It is also funny how a movie with such a huge budget used a soda can to simulate the breaking of the Titanic smoke tower. These sounds were stretched out and added an instinctual, heightened, and fearful response to the images we were seeing. They also connected us to the Titanic and it subconsciously made us emotional when we saw her sinking.

 

The track of instruments definitely heightened the dramatic element of the scene and successfully put all the other elements together. For a short scene that we did not even finish there seemed to be many elements and planning that went into the dramatization of the ship’s tragic death. It was a very informative demo and it opened my eyes to the amount of post-production that goes on in one scene of moviemaking.

I found a number of designs that I enjoyed ranging from movie posters to billboards to album art, but I felt this design was extremely creative and well executed. Above is a photo taken of the witty Frontline Flea medication advertisement covering a large portion of the first floor of a shopping mall in Jakarta, Indonesia. Its purpose is to promote the pet store JAKPETZ. This enormous floor poster is composed of a perfectly photoshopped golden retriever, scratching itself, layered over a white background with the text “Get them off your dog” and the logo for FRONTLINE flea and tick spray to the right of the pooch.
The one-liner statement uses a bold and thick sans serif typeface while also ending in a period. This creates a feeling of frustration rather than anger on the brink of insanity. The expression of the dog aids this observation of the text. What is really intriguing about this idea is that the public is not only viewing an advertisement, they are participating in it. When viewed from the second floor the people walking appear as fleas irritating the dog. It’s not every day that citizens are cleverly incorporated in ads. Their inclusion is the crucial component of the ad and without their presence the ad would lack its final element. This ad is perfect in areas where there is a high level of foot traffic, such as a shopping mall. Everyone enjoys the ad, from the people walking on it to those on the second floor entertained by it.
Less is definitely more when it applies to this particular advertisement.  Its simple design concept is what makes it effective. The message of the ad is if you want to rid your pet of fleas and ticks get FRONTLINE, which is conveniently offered at JAKPETZ.

In 2009, while attending SUNY Cortland, an amazing professor/friend of mine helped me deal with the hardships of college life by taking me to my first buffalo farm. The image within the sketch of the buffalo is one of the photos I took that day.
This idea started out as just a simple photo of buffalo, but through some brainstorming it has transformed into a professional stamp containing an endorsement for the PETA campaign. A stamp with a cause is always welcome here at fearless Creativity :D

Here is an image of Steve, the guy I interviewed for my assignment. I took a picture of both of us as proof of being there. The mock FOX interview was randomly taking place and the two in the photo were in their own zone; they were performing it for themselves and anyone who wanted to watch, but one could have easily missed it walking by. The Sarah Palin impersonator stopped by during my visit and was a hoot. She announced her Libertarian status and her backing out of her run for Presidency.

X-TRA CRED: How is media used and manipulated in the Occupy Wall Street Movement?

On Friday October 7, 2011 I decided to take the A train to the Fulton stop to briefly join my fellow brothers and sisters in the rapidly growing Occupy Wall Street protest at Zuccotti Park. It was so electrifying to finally be there after watching all the youtube videos, livestreams, coverage from smaller media outlets, slight recent coverage from mainstream media, and hearing all the passionate and frustrated sentiments felt by individuals I know personally.

When I arrived I didn’t know where to head first. There was so much going on I wanted to make sure I got a good look at everything. My first encounter was with a young mother holding her child with a sign that read “This child can’t afford healthcare.” The smaller print read “Not eligible for public assistance/ She makes ‘too’ much @ 30,000 a year.” When I asked her where I should go to get some questions answered she pointed me towards the “info” booth setup near the center of the park. As I got closer to the info section I passed a “Press Relations” sign. I quickly noticed just how organized the protesters had become contrary to the mainstream media’s belief. There were other organized areas scattered around the park such as the “Kitchen” and “Internet Café.”

When I arrived at the info booth I was not allowed access inside where all the organizers were present. I was asked by a man who appeared to be a little older than I “may I help you” and I asked him if I could just ask some questions for a media assignment concerning their media strategies. I can’t say for sure, but it seemed like I was dealing with a security protestor at the time – LOL.

After a short wait “Steve” came from inside the booth to greet me and we walked over to the barricades to do the interview. We felt the question “How is media used and manipulated in the Occupy Wall Street Movement?” was a bit ambiguous and weren’t sure if it applied to the manipulated mainstream media or the media manipulated by the protesters. Either way, Steve kindly answered both interpretations of the question and went into further detail on what was happening in general.

Here is the interview:

Q: How has the mainstream media manipulated the Occupy Wall Street Protest?

S: “Fox and CNN have their own agendas which are run by the government and backed by corporations. Whenever they would cover us they would find the drug circles, the guitar players, etc.; they would interview about 25 people and then choose the stutterer or the person who was there for the day still trying to figure out what was going on. The Fox team would not talk to the info/media departments here and instead chose to cover the homeless person with mental issues. Fox also brought one reporter, while other news stations brought vans, and they didn’t report a thing until their reporter got maced. Jon Stewart’s ‘The daily show’ has been mocking the mainstream news coverage and some of our more informed protesters have been interviewed which has been great.”

Q: What have been some of your media strategies and tools? I’ve seen a lot of youtube clips and tweets.

S: “There has definitely been a lot of footage on youtube, but the main thing we are using is livestream. When we were crossing the Brooklyn Bridge and 700 of us were arrested our livestream got around 22,000 views. Other states are streaming too; we’ve been broadcasting some of their streams at 3am when there isn’t a lot of action here in NY. Our twitter accounts have a high number of followers. OccupyNY has around 40,000 followers, OccupyWallStreet has about 80,000, and our facebook page has almost 150,000 likes.”

Q: A lot of mainstream coverage has attempted to portray the protesters as a young group of anti-capitalists who are unfocused without a specific demand and that they’re alone in this. What’s your opinion?  

S: “I wouldn’t say we’re anti-capitalist, but definitely more anti-large corporation. There are all groups of people here. It’s amazing to see people from the homeless to high school students sharing their experiences and reasons for being here. One of the best quotes I’ve heard from a student was ‘the nation’s debt is the heaviest backpack I’ve ever had to carry.’ We have received an incredible amount of foreign media coverage supporting our efforts. On October 19th some of the Egyptians that were part of the Arab Spring will be joining us. We also have a woman named Monica, a participant of the M-15 movement in Spain, who has brought with her plans of organization that the Spanish protestors had. When we return to the Brooklyn bridge, this time without crossing, the Haitian community plans on gathering at the other end of the bridge in support of getting U.S. soldiers out of Haiti and to end the wars. There is also a map online where you can see all the occupations around the country. The east coast is pretty full haha.”  

Q: How long does everyone plan on staying here?

S: “As of now there is no date when people plan on leaving, although we’ve been asked numerous times by different media outlets.”

I would like to thank Steve for taking the time to answer my questions and I wish him and everyone else the best of luck at Zuccotti park. It was inspiring to be there and I look forward to returning again soon.

A sample photo essay

This is a photo essay done on youth ‘coming out’ to a judgmental world. I love the way the photos link perfectly to tell a story. The audio clips, along with a photo slideshow, are also wonderfully done. At the end of the clip you get an update on the interviewee in text. I would love to create something like this.
